Today, I want to gently guide you towards the topic: Maintaining Distance from Your Inner Critic. Many people experience a harsh inner voice when feeling anxious or down. It might say: You're not trying hard enough, you shouldn't be like this, you always disappoint people, you must improve immediately. This voice sometimes masquerades as rationality, seemingly trying to help you improve, but it often makes you feel more afraid, ashamed, and powerless. Today, instead of rushing to eliminate this voice, let's first create some distance between ourselves and it. Think back to a phrase of inner criticism you hear most often and write it down. Then add the following sentence before it: "I noticed that my inner critic is saying this." For example, "I noticed that my inner critic is saying I'm useless." After adding these words, you'll find that the statement is no longer a fact; it's just a voice. Next, ask yourself: What is this voice trying to protect me from? Perhaps it's afraid you'll fail, afraid you'll be rejected, afraid you'll lose control, afraid you'll get hurt again. You can say to it: Thank you for trying to protect me, but the way you speak is too hurtful. I need gentler, more helpful reminders. Then write a new voice: I can start slowly; I can correct my mistakes; I don't need to push myself with humiliation; what I need now is support, not judgment. Remember, the inner critic won't necessarily quiet down immediately, but you can slowly stop completely believing it. You will find a more authentic version of yourself, not perfect, but willing to help you recover. Every time you can say that this is criticism, not fact, you've already pulled yourself back a little from its grasp. After reading aloud, please write down a sentence you want to distance yourself from your inner critic today.

◉ Japanese Food Therapy: Perilla Vinegar Ice Plant

I. Recommended Dietary Therapy and Reasons

Recommended dishes:Perilla Vinegar Iced Vegetables (mild and calming)

Recommended reasons:This lesson involves distancing yourself from your inner critic. Crisp and tangy side dishes can help awaken your senses and allow you to take a step back from criticism.

2. Recipe and Method

Recipe (1–2 servings):

  • 120 g of ice plant
  • 3 perilla leaves
  • 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar
  • A little light soy sauce
  • A small amount of white sesame seeds

practice:

  1. Wash the main ingredients thoroughly. Prepare the parts that need to be peeled, sliced, or shredded by cutting them into small, easy-to-eat pieces.
  2. Wash and drain the ice plant, then lightly toss it with perilla vinegar to retain its crisp texture.
  3. Keep the seasoning light, with less salt and sugar, and avoid using strong flavors that overpower the ingredients, making it easier for the body to accept.
  4. During the preparation process, you can slow down your movements and treat washing, cutting, boiling, and mixing as a small exercise to bring your attention back to the present moment.
  5. After serving, let it cool slightly to a comfortable temperature before eating to avoid putting extra strain on your body if it's too hot or too cold.
  6. Take your first bite slowly, savoring the aroma, temperature, and texture before letting your body decide whether to continue.
  7. If you have a poor appetite that day, you can eat a small amount. There is no need to force yourself to finish it. The key is to let your body know that you are being taken care of.

3. Small rituals for body and mind

When preparing perilla-flavored vinegar ice vegetable, you can first arrange the ingredients neatly to see their color, shape, and delicate texture. This small action can help your attention gradually shift from anxiety, depression, or recurring worries back to the present moment.

While waiting for your food to finish, give yourself three slow breaths. You don't need to immediately explain all your emotions or solve all your problems; just let your body know that you are safe at this moment.

When you take your first bite, focus on the temperature, aroma, and soft texture. You can gently tell yourself: I'm taking care of myself; I'm willing to slow down; I can start over.

4. Dietary Therapy Experience Record

  1. Record the time of consumption: whether it is breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a meal to settle down after emotional fluctuations.
  2. Observe changes in stomach comfort, body temperature, mental stability, and mood intensity within 30–60 minutes after consumption.
  3. If you consume it on days when you feel particularly anxious or down, you can keep track of whether it helps you slow down or gives your body a greater sense of security.

○ Calligraphy and engraving therapy practice

This calligraphy and seal engraving exercise has no specific content and does not require perfect character formation. When relationship stress repeatedly stirs your emotions, please focus your attention on holding the pen, placing the pen, pausing, and breathing, allowing the repetitive hand movements to gradually calm your nerves. Relationship stress is exhausting; when practicing, please withdraw your attention and give your boundaries some space. Please take it slowly. The focus of the exercise is not on how many characters you complete, but on maintaining a sense of reliable stability in each stroke, gently accompanying yourself through the day.
