Lesson 567: Four Typical Ways of Coping with Emotions

Course duration:70 minutes
Emotional coping can manifest as avoidance, repression, over-rationalization, or over-emotionalizing. You can have your most recent reaction analyzed by AI to see which pattern is most frequent and what it's truly trying to protect. Understanding before choosing will lead to greater stability. Smaller actions are also easier to maintain. This understanding will protect your recovery rhythm. This kind of analysis will make it easier to see the next step. Prioritize safety and manageability. You don't have to bear all the changes alone.

Today, I want to gently approach you with the topic: Four typical ways of coping with emotions. When faced with stress and emotions, people often use different coping mechanisms. Some people suppress their feelings, hiding their sadness, anger, and fear, appearing fine on the surface; some avoid them, not looking at, talking about, or dealing with them, temporarily reducing pain; some over-rationalize, analyzing all feelings into logic, but rarely truly connecting with the emotions within; another approach is constructive processing, which means first acknowledging the emotion, then responding with appropriate actions, expressions, and support. Please note that the first three approaches are not necessarily bad; they have sometimes protected you. Suppression might help you get through times without a safe space; avoidance might temporarily prevent you from being overwhelmed; rationalization might help you maintain function. The problem is, if they become the only way, the emotion is not truly processed, and your body and relationships will slowly pay the price. Today, gently observe which approach you use most often. Reflect on your most recent stressful event: did you suppress your feelings, avoid the problem, analyze it without feeling anything, or did you express, seek help, or take some action? Please write down the four coping mechanisms on a piece of paper, and for each one, write a sentence about how it used to protect you. Then write a sentence: How would I like it to be healthier now? For example, suppression can be changed to temporarily letting go but recording it later; avoidance can be changed to resting first and then dealing with it; rationalization can be combined with body awareness; constructive processing can start with very small expressions. Please remember that moving from unconscious reactions to conscious choices is itself a great step forward. You don't need to reject all old methods, because they were the paths you found in times of difficulty. Now, you can build another path. The next time emotions arise, you can ask yourself: Am I currently suppressing, avoiding, rationalizing, or constructively processing them? Just being able to ask this question slows down the automatic reaction a little. Slowing down allows choices to return a little. After reading aloud, please write a sentence: My old coping mechanisms once protected me; now I am willing to slowly learn to make freer choices.

When identifying coping mechanisms, you can listen to a piece of music with a clear structure, dividing it into four sections: repression, avoidance, over-rationalization, and constructive processing. Each piece of music corresponds to a mechanism; write down how it once protected you, and also how you can adjust more gently now.

I. Recommended Dietary Therapy and Reasons
Recommended dishes:Grape Baked Cheese (A warm connection, a glimpse into old patterns)
Recommended reasons:This lesson introduces four coping mechanisms: repression, avoidance, over-rationalization, and constructive coping. Baked grape cheese is warm and delicate, suitable for consumption in small amounts when observing old patterns. The sweetness of the grapes and the softness of the cheese blend together, reminding you that old methods once protected you, and that new choices can now be gradually introduced. Don't try to immediately change your mood while eating it; simply treat this food as a gentle pause, allowing your body to receive support first, making it easier for your mind to make new choices.
2. Recipe and Method
Recipe (1–2 servings):
- 120 g of grapes
- 80g low-salt cheese
- A few drops of olive oil
- A little thyme
- A pinch of black pepper, optional.
practice:
- Wash the main ingredients and prepare the parts that need to be cut into pieces, steamed, boiled until soft, or prepared in advance.
- Place grapes and cheese in a baking dish, sprinkle with thyme, and bake at a low temperature until the grapes release a little juice and the cheese softens.
- Use low heat, stir gently, or bake at a low temperature to allow the ingredients to meld together in a gentle rhythm.
- Keep the seasoning light, with less salt, sugar, and oil, and avoid using strong, pungent flavors that overpower the ingredients.
- Let it cool slightly after serving before eating. Take your first bite slowly to appreciate the temperature, aroma, and texture.
3. Small rituals for body and mind
When preparing baked grape cheese, you can first arrange the ingredients neatly, noting their color, shape, and texture, allowing your attention to gradually shift from emotional reactions, relational stimuli, event interpretations, or self-blame back to the present moment.
During the process, take three slow breaths. Don't rush to explain, respond to, or fix all the problems. Just let your body know: I am doing something small that can be accomplished.
When you take your first bite, first feel the temperature and texture, then gently tell yourself: I am taking care of myself, I am willing to take it slow, and I can choose to take the next step again.
If you're still feeling emotional, stop and don't force yourself to continue. What's truly important isn't eating a complete meal, but rather sending your body a safe, gentle signal that it's time to pause.
4. Dietary Therapy Experience Record
- Record the time of consumption; is it a regular meal or a meal to settle down after emotional fluctuations?
- Observe changes in stomach comfort, body temperature, and mood intensity within 30–60 minutes after consumption.
- Write a sentence: After this dietary therapy, what new action do I want to take care of myself?

○ Calligraphy and engraving therapy practice
When identifying coping mechanisms, observe whether you tend to suppress, avoid, or over-control your actions when writing or engraving, or whether you are able to handle them gently. Don't worry about what you're writing specifically; just observe the movement patterns. Let practice help you move from unconscious reactions to conscious choices.

○ Art Therapy Guidance
Please draw four different paths, representing repression, avoidance, over-rationalization, and constructive processing. Use a different color for each path to express bodily sensations. Finally, choose a gentler new path and add a touch of brightness to it, symbolizing the transition from unconscious reaction to choice.
Please log in before submitting your drawings and feelings.

○ Diary Healing Suggestions
Please write down your most frequently used emotional coping mechanisms recently: suppression, avoidance, over-rationalization, or constructive processing.
